Akapnayan is an annual charity outreach event held as part of UP ACME’s foundation anniversary. The event is traditionally geared towards engendering an appreciation for science in children who may not have opportunities to experience it firsthand, such as orphans and those from backgrounds of poverty.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization has instead opted to conduct Akapnayan 2020 as a public information and fundraising drive to help address the crisis afflicting the nation. UP ACME believes that this was the best way it can uphold its values in these times.
Akapnayan aimed to educate the public on the steps they can take to prevent the spread of coronavirus while combating the false information circulating the web. To this end, the official UP ACME page posted infographics and educational videos on COVID-19. Aside from this, UP ACME was also able to raise PHP 62,164 in merchandise payments and donations that were donated to Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership to provide PPE and food/care packages to COVID-19 frontliners.

7th HSM: HANEP SA SCIENCE AT MATH
A scientific writing symposium and competition
The 7th installment of Hanep sa Science at Math, UP ACME’s flagship event, was held last May 22 and May 23, 2021. Previously a math and science quiz bee, this year’s HSM was redesigned to be a scientific writing symposium and competition open to all junior high and senior high school students, as well as out-of-school youth aged 13-19 years old nationwide. With the help of credible expert guest speakers, the event aims to promote the appreciation of natural sciences, hone scientific writing skills, and establish the importance of scientific discourse and fact-checking in the Philippines especially among the youth.
Team ADAMAS was declared as Champion of the writing contest and bagged Php 7,000. First and second runners-up SJCNHS-SHS Team A and PaSci Neoterics brought home Php 5,000 and Php 3,000, respectively. All teams also received giveaways from sponsors of the event.
Through HSM, UP ACME hopes to have further forwarded our goal of nurturing the youth to become more academically competent and to engender their passion for sciences.

An Undergraduate Thesis Symposium
Thesis It! 2020 is a two-day online undergraduate thesis symposium held last October 3 and October 10 by UP ACME. The event serves as an avenue for the introduction of various chemistry research laboratories in the UP Diliman Institute of Chemistry, their ongoing projects, and the adjustments incorporated by these laboratories in light of the pandemic. It also aims to provide insights to sophomore and junior chemistry undergraduate students as to how to conduct their undergraduate thesis and aid students in determining which specialization they may intend to pursue in the future.
